The bond between Eragon and Saphira is fantastic and heartwarming and Saphira is so EPIC. I love books with dragons, but it's so difficult to find amazing ones. My favourite part is obviously the dragons. While I do like some of the secondary characters, such as Saphira, Arya, Angela, Nasuada and Murtagh (whose appearance at the end of Eldest could be the origin of a potentially amazing anti-hero), I didn't get attached to any of them. I don't mind the Farmboy-Becomes-The-Chosen-One trope, as long as the character is compelling and there's no deus ex machina happenings, but Eragon is just alright. Eragon and Eldest is slow-paced, predictable, repetitive and extremely descriptive, but it's these aspects that make for a relaxing, calming and enjoyable audiobook experience.Įragon is one of the OG Gary-Stu's. That Bloom was himself no ideologue, writes Jim Sleeper he was a close friend of Saul Bellow and “an eccentric interpreter of Enlightenment thought who led an Epicurean, quietly gay life.” Nonetheless, his fiery attack on changing academic values, The Closing of the American Mind, became a textbook of the neoconservative right. Bloom’s reputation perhaps unfairly fell victim to the so-called “ Canon Wars,” likely at times because of a misidentification with political philosopher Allan Bloom. And in many quarters of academia, mention of the name of Yale literary critic Harold Bloom provoked, at the very least, a raised eyebrow and pointed silence. I have little desire to rehash the politics, but the facts are plain: by the time I arrived in college as an undergraduate English major in the mid-90s, the idea of the “Western Canon” as a container of-in the words of a famous hymn-“all that’s good, and great, and true” was seriously on the wane, to put it mildly. The twists and turns kept me listening into the wee hours. The kidnapper is demanding the Elizabeth kill someone and is threatening to kill Joyce if she doesn’t. In the meantime, Elizabeth along with Stephen find themselves kidnapped. It was an interesting case from retracing her steps to interviews. The cold case involves the murder of a journalist that they believe got too close to uncover a theft. Ron is in a new relationship, and Ibrahim is slowly recovering from events in the previous book. Elizabeth can be tenacious, as her background suggests. You’ll get to know their backgrounds, personalities, and day-to-day problems. I absolutely love this series and while each book deals with a murder-mystery, I recommend listening in order as we get to know our four main characters, seniors Elizabeth, Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron. She is more breathy than Lesley, but speeding up the narration to 1.3x and upping the volume at a notch, did the trick. Lesley Manville narrated the first two and while I was initially worried and it took me some time to adjust, particularly to the voice of Joyce, Fiona Shaw ended up doing a fine job. With book three, we saw a change in narration. When the pair have an accidental run-in at a coffee shop, they both find something they didn’t know they were looking for. Except, if that were really true, he wouldn’t have taken his roommate’s dare to go to a local munch-a casual meeting for like-minded people-would he? Maybe he has a wild side after all.
